The social anxiety disorder or social phobia is a mental state where people feel a permanent fear others’ criticism and evaluation. Those suffering from social anxiety are a lot more diffident than the rest of the people to such a degree to think everybody is watching them and judging them badly. They are afraid of and anxious about everything that is surrounding them. Social phobia sufferers find the everyday social life as quite intimidating experience.
One of the main problems with the anxiety sufferers is their enormous desire to be admired and loved by the others. Their desire others to see them as clever, sociable, dynamic people is overwhelming. The trouble is, because of their anxiety of not doing quite well in public, most of these efforts are foredoomed to fail. When meeting new people, especially if they want to be liked by them, they get frozen and do not know what to do. The fear of the thought that their anxiety can be easily noticed and recognized by the others makes the anxiety to grow even more and all this turns into a vicious circle.
The social phobia normally develops in the childhood and if not treated on time deepens throughout the years and becomes a chronic and very traumatic, tantalizing condition. Nevertheless, if treated appropriately and adequately, in the process it is very likely that the sufferer will manage to overcome this torturous condition.
The anxiety disorder is considered as a chronic condition that is usually linked to other psychiatric illnesses and is something that in majority of the cases continues for life. Nowadays though, this is not necessarily the case, because of the huge improvements in the life quality and the development of new and quite radical and successful treatments. All these are accessible to every anxiety disorder sufferer.
Scientifically the social anxiety disorder associates with very low levels of so-called neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Scientific researches also have proven that social phobia sufferers are five times more exposed to the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease later in life, which is caused by very low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. All this means that medicines that help increasing the levels of the neurotransmitters involved, can be used very successfully to treat social anxiety disorder.
Lot of changes are happening in the human body when social phobia sufferer becomes anxious. One of the first symptoms is quick breathing. This leads to misbalance of the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body, which triggers other physical symptoms like increased heart rate, dizziness, muscle tension, etc. To learn how to get the breathing back to normal will aid take control of these physical symptoms of anxiety. Many breathing exercises have been developed for decreasing the physical symptoms of anxiety and help sufferer to remain calm.
Considered as one of the most successful methods to get over the social phobia is the one that makes sufferers to face the situations triggering their fear and not to avoid them. To learn how to cope with those situations is the way of overcoming the fear, because avoiding it leads only to deepening of the disorder and makes this kind of social encounters even more feared and frightening. It may look impossible to get over such feared social situations at once, but this can be done by taking one step at a time.
There are many psychological treatments known to date and one of the most successful such treatments is the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which could be individual and also group therapy. The therapies are based on establishing such environments that will allow the sufferers to be able to address their fears and find ways of overcoming these fears. Different strategies are developed with the aid of a therapist for finding ways that are more effective in order to achieve that. The group therapies have the advantage of meeting and socializing with people who have the same problems and this gives the sufferers the realization that they are not alone into this.
