<p>What  is the nature of sanity? This is perhaps as difficult to answer as what  is the nature of madness? The paradox is that one does not exist  without the other and in a ying and yang fashion they possess each  other.  As science gains greater insight into the functioning of the  brain, it becomes apparent that each tiny cell is responsible for one  aspect of consciousness or another.  This can be demonstrated by  stimulating individual areas of the brain with various drugs or electric  currents producing profound changes not only in motor functions but  also in beliefs, emotions, and perceptions.</p>
<p>Should our brains produce  too much or too little of one chemical or another then we may start to  experience the world in an intensely different way from our neighbour.   The interpretation of this reality is often described as madness of one  sort or another.  It is perhaps it’s  intensity which distinguishes and draws line between sanity and  madness.</p>
<p>This is organic madness and so for us all we walk a chemical  tightrope that can at any time snap.  Then there is the other type of  <a href="http://www.socialanxietyselfhelp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/sanity.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-28" title="sanity" src="http://www.socialanxietyselfhelp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/sanity-300x187.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="187" /></a>madness this is Reactive madness.  This happens in reaction to outside  stimuli, generally exposer to experiences with which the individual for  countless reasons finds themselves unable to successfully process and  assimilate into their understanding of the world.  This can manifest it’s  self just as organic madness as perceived madness.</p>
<p>Surely they are  however just different ways of  interpreting a reality not shared by the  majority  and as such should not be viewed as madness but as  experiencing the world in a way that falls outside the understanding of a  transient  majority. It is however this transiency between states of  sanity and insanity by the majority which gives rise to the belief that  sanity is a state which is the same for us all and that though the use  of psychoactive drugs can also be achieved, This thinking serves to  undermine the credibility of those who are different and who’s  experiencing of the world manifests itself in the expression of beliefs  and behaviours seen as contrary to the accepted norms of the majority.</p>
<p>So in summary sanity is the fluid accepted collective consciousness of  an unstable majority at a given time and place and as such is open to  cultural interpretation.</p>

<p>Our mental health is how we think,  react and feel. Many people are affected by a mental health issue at some point  in their lives. In fact the latest statistics from the government would go as  far as to say that one in four has. That is nearly 15,500,000 people in the UK. And these  figures could be only the tip of the iceberg as these are  statistics that are based on those people receiving  treatment. Countless more are yet to be  diagnosed.</p>

<p>Mental health problems are as  ranging as the people who suffer from them. Depression is the most common  form of mental health problem with 1in 10 people here in the UK experiencing it  at some point in their lives. Statistics show that depression is more common  amongst women, 1in4, where as men, 1in10,  are more likely to take drastic measures such as to commit suicide. There are  many theories as to why this may be. One of which is that men are less likely to  seek help for their conditions. The many  ranging <a href="http://www.socialanxietyselfhelp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Mental-Health-advice.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-25" title="Mental-Health advice" src="http://www.socialanxietyselfhelp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Mental-Health-advice-300x282.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="282" /></a>symptoms of depression can  include restlessness, insomnia, loss of appetite, and in extreme causes the  desire to commit suicide, to name but a few.</p>

<p>At the other end of the mental  health scale is a condition known as schizophrenia. Sufferers show symptoms such as hallucinations, paranoia,  delusions and disorganised speech and thinking. There are as many as 1in100  sufferers in the UK. There is a lot of stigma  surrounding this illness as most people have  misconceptions regarding it. Many believe schizophrenics to have split  personalities and to be violent but this is not  the case. It would be more accurate to say  that people with schizophrenia have a mind that can experience episodes of  dysfunction and disorder.</p>

<p>It is important to look after our  mental health and there are many ways in which we can do this. Simple steps such  as regular exercise and socializing help us to keep our mind healthy. Taking  time to relax and accepting yourself are also key goals in looking after your  mental health. But it is most important to remember that there is no shame in  suffering from a mental health issue. If  you feel you are suffering and unable  to cope then do not hesitate to reach out to your local  GP or a friend or relative. Help is always  available if you need it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most common psychiatric conditions is the social anxiety disorder. A research shows that about 14% of the adults and 1% of the children have it. The cause for social anxiety is a combination of two factors &#8211; genetics and environment. When anxiety disorder is inherited – the cause of course is genetic.</p>
<p>Many children have one or two parents with an anxiety disorder, but not necessarily with social anxiety disorder. Children who are permanently irritable as babies, shy and fearful as toddlers, and cautious, quiet, and self-conscious at school age are lot more likely to have biological parents with anxiety disorders. They are also more likely to develop social anxiety disorder later in life. By environmental cause is meant everything outside genetics. Most common of the environmental causes of social anxiety disorder are &#8211; speech or language problem, physical illness, abuse, neglect, nervous parents and certain quite embarrassing experiences. Most of the cases are a combination of both causes &#8211; genetic and environmental. The genetic load must be massive &#8211; both parents with multiple anxiety disorders &#8211; to cause social anxiety disorder in the lack of any environmental problem. And the other way round, it takes a huge environmental cause – a huge abuse and neglect &#8211; to cause an anxiety disorder if there is no family history of such illnesses.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.socialanxietyselfhelp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/social-anxiety-children.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-22" title="social anxiety children" src="http://www.socialanxietyselfhelp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/social-anxiety-children-282x300.jpg" alt="" width="282" height="300" /></a>The symptoms of social anxiety disorder can be seen in children as young as one year old. The children who have this condition are less interested in exploring new things. Instead of being excited by new things, they are more likely to be scared. During the preschool, they are shy with strangers and might not speak and contact well to people outside the family. Quite a lot of children with social anxiety disorder have some speech or language problems. Others are shy and have some physical medical problem, which makes them more noticeable, but most have no language or physical problems. This is why children with this condition almost never have been considered to require assessment at this point. Here are the most feared social situations: reading aloud in front of class; musical or athletic performances;  joining in on a conversation; starting a conversation; writing on the blackboard; speaking to adults;  ordering food in a restaurant; attending dances or birthday parties. Not so common are: answering questions in class; working or playing with other kids; asking the teacher for help; gym class; inviting a friend over; eating in a cafeteria with kids; walking in the hallway; answering the phone; eating in front of others.</p>
<p>Social anxiety disorder is very disabling. Children suffering from it are often loners but they do not really want to be. They have poor social skills. They are very lonely. Children with social anxiety disorder have no or few friends. Half of them are not taking part in any after school activities. Half do not like school and 10% refusing to go to school. There is a big number of different anxiety disorders, which are often found with social anxiety disorder. Separation anxiety disorder &#8211; it is a fear of separation from the parents. About 6% of children with social anxiety disorder have this. Generalized anxiety disorder &#8211; children who worry all the time over nothing &#8211; themselves, others safety, their health, the world, and everything else you can imagine. Panic disorder &#8211; when the brain is giving a rush of adrenaline for no good reason. Post-traumatic stress disorder &#8211; when something horrible happened to a child, they would keep thinking of it repeatedly, avoid things that remind them of that, being very nervous. Phobias- an unreasonable fear of all sorts of things. Being in crowds, in the dark, dying, and heights are common ones.</p>
<p>Many children with social anxiety disorder have other psychiatric disorders as well. Some have panic attacks, attention deficit disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, or depression. Quite often, you can see a child with two anxiety disorders, depression, and attention deficit disorder at the same time.</p>

Those who suffer from social anxiety disorder withdraw because of fear of negative estimation by others. People who suffer from depression withdraw because of lack of enjoyment in their lives. Social anxiety sufferers expect to enjoy themselves if they can somehow interact properly with others, while those with depression do not ever expect to enjoy themselves at all. It proves very important to know what exactly the symptoms for both conditions are, and in this connection, their proper and early diagnosis.</p>
<p>People with social anxiety disorder frequently suffer from depression. According to the World Psychiatric Association statistics(1995), 17% of social anxiety sufferers also have clinical depression. The problem is that many people suffering from depression are not diagnosed. If sufferer is so depressed that the motivation is very low and he/she feels despair about the chance of overcoming the social anxiety, it may interfere with the treatment. Here are some of the symptoms of the depression: a) persistent sad, anxious mood; b) feeling of hopelessness, negativity, and pessimism; c) difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions; d) feeling of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness; e) decreased energy, fatigue; f) loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex; g) sleep disturbances such as insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping; h) thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts; i) appetite and  weight loss or overeating and weight gain; j) thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts; k) restlessness, irritability; l) physical symptoms not responding to treatment like headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain.</p>
<p>Depression sufferers cannot just shrug off their feelings. This illness cannot go away by itself. However, the vast majority of people with depression can overcome it with a proper treatment. Many social anxiety sufferers quite often have panic attacks because of the intense fear and discomfort. It is important to know that an early diagnosis can help minimizing the symptoms and the development of additional conditions, such as depression. In fact, the depression is the condition that makes people to seek help, even though social anxiety disorder could be the real problem. Normally people who have social anxiety disorder are not going speak to anyone about their problems and do not realize that they have a diagnosable illness. The result is that most of those with social anxiety disorder do not usually get treatment unless the illness occurs alongside another condition. A. Beck – an American psychotherapist helped to develop CBT and believed that the way we think about a situation affects how we act. On the other hand, our actions affect the way we think and feel. This means what needs to be changed are both thinking and behaviour at the same time. And this is what we call cognitive behavioural therapy.</p>
